I'm not for sure about the block deck height being the same. If I had my parts book handy, it would probably show a serial number break and/or a different part number if there was a major change (and this type of change would qualify). On the valves, you said that new ones were ordered. Could the shop have possibly ordered valves for a gasoline (high compression) head? Or the fact that these engines haven't been made now for 40+ years and it's only available in the longest length with the expectation the they would be ground by the machine shop? Forgot to mention earlier - Glyptal paint on the inside of the block looks good too. Thanks for the piston info.
