Need Generator help please

Thanks for all the help getting my 200 running.

Once I got the 200 running, I noticed it had a slight discharge. Since I just replaced the voltage regulator with one from carter and gruenwald (spelling?) I was going to take the generator to the local generator shop. I put new belts on the other day and when I started it up the guage went back and forth from the middle to all the way over on the charge side. It would level out to the last mark before the "C" on the guage. I thought it maybe because the battery was almost dead that it was pulling such a charge. Yesterday, I let the tractor run for a couple hours. The needle stayed way over on the charge side. I noticed a smell and cut off the tractor. The generator started smokin' like crazy. I started it back up (battery is charging back up though) and went and parked it. Still showing way over in the charge side.

Where should the needle on the guage normally be?
Slightly to the charge side?

Also, any ideas on what would make it overcharge like that?
