When this happens, it is almost always a fuel issue. Something is making the air/fuel mixture too lean. This could be due to a plugged fuel line, idle and load jets set too lean, or dirt plugging one of the carb ports, or float set too low. Remember that the idle air adjust screw is an air mixture screw, and the more you back it out, the more air mixes with the idle gas. As you turn the idle screw in, it actually richens the mixture. Most carbs work the other way. Hope this helps. Just my opinion.
