diesel problems

I went to get some equipment with my 966 last night and I stalled the tractor about 4 miles from home. It would turn over good but would not start. I went back about 1/2 hour later and cranked it over about 10 seconds and it started up, headed it for home. It stalled in my driveway and would not start again. I gave it a snort of starting fluid and it started right up. It should start right up when it is warm without much cranking but it doesn't. what is the problem. It misses on a couple cylinders when it is first started when cold. it sounds like it is running real good when it is running on all cylinders. just sets there and purrs. thanks for the advice
