Changing the seal and the bushing on the steering box of the M is a fairly big job. If it's only leaking a little, a quick fix is to just put grease in the steering gear instead of oil. Unless the tractor has a magneto, it may stop if the battery goes dead, especially if you are having charging problems as you indicate. The generator may not be putting out enough to run the ignition. You indicate it only cranks for a short time and then is dead. That sounds like a bad battery, or one that is low of charge. As to the gas leaking from the carb, you'll have to overhaul the carb, or as a temp fix, when you shut down, just shut off the gas at the tank and let it run until it dies. THen there will be no gas to leak. Letting the gas run out of the carb is good practice anyway, if you are using the tractor infrequently.
