Finished up the steering gear box overhaul a little while ago. At the steering wheel I used to have 3/4 turn of slop and now I'm down to about 1/8. The bearings had a little vertical play in them and the key way between the flat worm gear and the shaft had been enlarged. The key had also enlarged the slot in the worm gear. The teeth on both gears were great, IMO. After cleaning everything up, I dropped the key in the keyway and welded it fast and then trimmed the weld down for a press fit. Next I pressed the worm gear onto the shaft over the key. Drilled a couple of 3/8 holes through the back side of the gear into the shaft and spot welded the gear fast as well. ( For good luck I guess, didn't want to have to go back in ) New bearings & seals and back together it went. Filled it with oil and turned the pipe plug into it's hole with a growing sense of satisfaction. The feeling disolved as the top of the plug snapped off leaving the bottom half in. So here I sit. Easy out ain't easy today. Don't want to drill it as I will fill the newly rebuilt box with shavings. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? NOT "havin fun in MO" today
