If you have been using a "detergent" oil before then B.K. is on the money. If you have only used "non-detergent" oil then I would stick with it, in 30 weight as mentioned. In 1949 I don't 'think' multi-weight oil was in wide spread use, not necessarily that the Cub was "not engineered" for it. I've used straight 30 weight 'racing' oil(Valvaline) for years in older tractors with excellent results if you're worried about heat.
