It sounds like your battery may not be getting enough charge. Is your generator working? Is the regulator OK?
A 6 volt system should handle a 140 just fine if everything is working right. Check the things that jal-SD mentioned, it may not take much to fix the problem.
As to battery life of a 6-volt, I have a 6-volt battery in my 1940 B that was installed in the fall of 1994. Still starts the tractor just fine.
