John, check the stamped # on the flat spot on the block that's adjacent to the #1 plug. I understand that A's, B's & C's didnt necessarily have the same engine # as the chasis serial #, but it should be close. (Ifna the engine hasn't been changed out that is-new blocks installed by IH dealers didn't have a stamped #'s-change mechanic was supposed to stamp 'em, but I know of an H that that didn't happen to.) Also, see other discussions in the archives about dating by the casting#'s. Might not be an "exact" science, but should get ya close. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
