H shifter

The shifter on my '40 H is worn and letting the trans. get in 2 gears at a time. The end of the shifter was rounded off so I did some welding on it and got the corners square again but I'm still having the same problem. I guess I need to build it up some more.
About 3/4" from the end of the shifter there is a notch on both sides. It appears to be machined, does anyone know for sure if this notch is supposed to be there, and if so about how long should it be from the bottom of the notch to the end of the shifter?
