Cold motor knock on a '47 International I-4

My I-4 has begun to sound like an engine knock when cold. Once it warms up, the sound goes away. I plan to pull the pan off this weekend. Can anything be determined just by grasping the rods to check for excessive play? Or should I just plan to pull the rod caps and plasti-gage the rod clearance? I'm not even sure its the rods. Oil pressure is good and oil is clean.
