I think Robert C. is probably right. Back when I was in grade school, we were told that the custom started with ships. It may be that the sailors missed their shore-bound women and sort of transferred their emotions to their ships while at sea. Another explanation may be that females sometimes compete with other things for men's attention and affection -- things like the sea, ships, tractors, cars, etc. Remember "Viva Las Vegas", where Ann-Margret sang, "My rival is a baby-blue racing car"? As for myself, I only have one tractor, and it's a male. My dad left me his 300 Utility when he died in 1993, and I call it "Little Al" in his memory. He needs a lot of attention, but he will get it one of these days. As for my cars and trucks, neither "he" nor "she" seems to fit. Usually %#$@*&$^!!! seems more appropriate. Come to think of it, though, they must be male, because I usually and up calling them a "son" of something or other! Mark W.
