My 184 has the starter and alternator seperate. I knew the clutch was not working so I adjusted the clutch. Still no good...BUT, when I applied the clutch hard, it killed the motor. The motor is good, so clearly I was applying braking force when I applied the clutch. As for forward or rearward clutch, I have no idea which is which. Evidently my 184 is old enough to have the starter / alternator combo though.
