The original starter should have had a stub copper post externally. The original starter switch has the threaded post on it. This switch mounts on the starter by screws in two small holes in the starter. When you pull the starter rod it moves a bronze wedge between the starter stub and the other end of the threaded post, making contact.

When the starter switch goes bad it is common for a starter shop to remove the stub post and install a threaded post so a solenoid can be used.

A starter shop could return it to original, but you'd have to buy a mechanical starter switch and the starter rod running back to the steering post.
