I put a Delco alternator on my H a few years ago.
It is a tight fit under the hood. The easiest way
to tighten the belt is with an idler pulley. They
can be had for just a few bucks and when you
fabricate the mounting bracket for the alternator,
it is very easy to include a swinging arm for the
idler. 12v is definately better for cold weather
starting, using lights, and safer to jump
