300 starts fast...

Trying to get a 300 sorted out. Tractor starts ok, runs well for 1-2 min and then under load starts cutting out and eventually quits for a non restart, by the time it quits the temp gauge is 1/3 up into the Cold range, that's rather fast isn't it? Sediment bowl has been off and cleaned, twice, there was a very fine dust looking residue.
Previous owner 12 volted and replaced key start with ignition pull switch and push button starter. All wiring was shot and push switch was about gone, replaced wire and put in new key ignition/start. Suggestions? Appreicate any help.
