Keith - Sounds like you may have an adjustable wheelbase WF axle off a straight M, and it's set up in the "long wheelbase". This would locate the front axle out in front of the grille as you describe. It can be reconfigured to a "short wheelbase" by repositioning the front axle adapter father back under the tractor frame. The adjustable WB axle does not appear in my Super M operator's manual or parts catalog. It is however detailed on pages 65 and 66 in an MD (non-super) operator's manual I have.
