recovering serial number on C

we have a C sitting around, but the serial number plate is AWOL... not original motor...
is there any place where the serial number can also be found? (thinking of an alis wd or ford 5000 with stamped castings in various places) or a rough estimate of it's year from casting numbers?
also what is interesting, is that i beleive it's a C, but it has a fast hitch! Thought that was a SC thing...oh well :) gotta get her fixed some day.
