Bush hog size

I was putting the blades back on a bush hog that was left at the farm my daughter just bought. I noticed that the 3 point hitch and the transmission were not in the center of the deck. when I looked under, it had a space of about 12 inches on the left side that the blades didn' reach. This is the first time I have seen a mower like this. Why did it have the space on the side?
