BN front wheel spindle

I posted a while back about a spindle that was lightly stripped--the nut threaded until it started to draw up and then just spun. Got lots of good help and the wheel is back on in good shape. BUT . . . the problem stems from the fact that there are no holes in the spindle to run the cotter pin through. It's the left wheel, so it only makes sense that the lack of holes is the root of the problem. So . . . How hard is that spindle? Am I going to need a specialty/hard bit to drill through it? I see a pain in the neck but not nasty project--pull the wheel, clean off the grease so the drilled filings don't wind up inside . . . Will common B&D twist drill bits do the job or should I get a carbide tip? How big for a 1/8 inch cotter pin? Thanks, as always for any guidance. Scotty
