When you turn it do you hear the impulse coupling work. If not I would start there. It could be you need new points and condenser. Have you had the cap off to see if the carbon rods are OK and have a spring behind them. You could also have a bad coil but I would check all the other stuff first - a coil isn't cheap. Points, condensers and coils are available from NAPA. I also had the pin that shorts it out when you shut if off fall out once and it landed in the right spot to be shorted out all the time.
