I have the old style PTO that has the flat cast plate out back instead of the one that sticks out 6 inches or so. I don't know if the newer style has shims. Where the cast plate bolts onto the rear of the tractor there are shims so you can set the amount of play in the PTO - how much the shaft can move in and out. If there is too much play it will eat up the engagement cogs from sliding back and forth (also my sprocket that drives the mower). Too tight and when you disengage the PTO it will keep turning.
