On most pumps the oil pressure is regulated by an internal valve. This is located on the pressure side of the pump. If this valve doesn't work, the pressure will build up enough to blow out the seals ( and the oil ). In a V8 engine I have seen the flats on the oil filter rounded out before the seal blew. All oil was lost in less than 60 seconds, @ 70mph.
