Look the tractor over visually: are there oil leaks? Are hoses and wires in good condition? How are the tires, the seat, the paint? Look at the pivot points of the steering, front end, hitch, clutch/TA linkages. Does the radiator show signs of leaking? Check the clutch pedal for sloppiness, a sign of heavy use. Move the shift levers, chech for sloppiness, stiffness, etc. Does the steering wheel have excessive play? How easily does the engine start? This is a good indicator. Watch for excessive smoke at startup. Drive the tractor, listening for gear noise, check for wheel wobble. Use the TA in both posistions and apply the brakes a little--this should be enough load to test it. The first problem is usually in low range (TA back): the one-way clutch is usually the first thing to go. It helps to have a knowledgeable, opinionated friend to go along.
