There is a possibility here that you have a blown head gsket. Did you check the temperature with a thermoneter, or just assume it was boiling because of the bubbles? When the engine gets warm, a leaky gasket, or cracked head might manifest with bubbling in the radiator. A blown head gasket would also allow the water to heat rapidly.
