BobM, Thanks for your concerns. I have I believe a 4gpm pump on my Farmall A running a single V-belt from the belt pulley. It has enough power to lift any implement we have on the farm, although not at a high rate of speed. The belt is run fairly tight, but not as tight as I run fan belts on the tractors. It will squeal the belt when you get to the end of a ram, but not much. All I plan on using the live pump for would be to lift the mid mount sickle mower that I got with the tractor, not too much of a load. I will use the belly pump for other applications. Steven PS - I am looking into the cogged drive belts mentioned above for a pump drive, and also to drive my mower from the PTO instead of using a chain.
