i think your knock may be your starter popping in and out of engagement (not enough electric) solution: replace the switch on top of the starter, it has bad contacts, you could fix it by cleaning up the points possiby also but it may not last that long and while you have it off, clean the knob on the starter where the switch contacts, another thing it to just check all of your battery connections and its charge.
