Initially the plain white light was all that was put on the back. I think the red combination lights were options later on, with plain white still the standard configuration. The separate red light on top came along first and was replaced in later production with the red light set into the white reflector.

I have been told that the separate red light dates to 1951 only. I haven't been able to verify that.
