Sam - You want NO play in the generator bearings, otherwise you risk tearing up the armature and field shoes. The good news is the pulley end bearing a standard ball bearing. You can easily remove it yourself, and any bearing supplier or alternator shop can provide a replacement. While you've got the generator apart, check the commutator end bearing (actually a bushing) for wear and replace it too if any play exists. Also while you're in there clean up the commutator (take a light cut on the lathe if it's rough or out of round) and install new brushes.
