BN axle woes

Working on a 47 BN that's been sitting out for several years. The fellow that had it started to fix a wheel bearing and gave up. He kept the wheel, but I had to haul it all home one one front wheel. I've got a set of replacement bearings, races and seal, but things aren't coming together right. When I get things all assembled and go to tighten down, the castle nut spins out after a while as if the threads on the axle are stripped. Guess that's why the old guy gave up on it. At the spot the threads quit biting, there is too much wobble, so I can't just make do. I'll check to see if there is another set of bearings that will let me draw things up tighter. If that doesn't pan out, how hard are BN axles to a) come by, and b) replace. Is it possible/practical to weld up the axle and rethread? Am I better off replacing bolster and all. Any thoughts, shared experience or guidance is appreciated. Scotty
