PTO shaft will just slide out when not engaged.

1950 Cub Half way through restoration of Cub, working on back of PTO unit saturday, pulled on pto shaft and came 7/8's the way out just before the last splinded whasher fell off shaft, could see around seal with light. I put it back in and engaged the pto lever, then the shaft stays put. Take the pto lever out, or in free wheel the shaft can fall out. I know this is not right. Is there a "C" clip or somthing that has fallen off shaft to hold it in place. Need Help! Thanks Gentelmen.
