Do you have 12 volts at the points with just the switch on? The only time you should have 12volts at the points is when you are cranking the engine. There should be just a tad over 6 volts with the switch on. If not you have a problem with the resistor. Do you have a 2 wire solenoid? There should be a wire on the R terminal. This gives you 12 volts at start up. When the solenoid kicks off after start up, then you should have less than 12volts. If you have 12 all the time that's why your points are burning.
