Tom, Hughe is correct. The 504 was way overrated. It came mostly from the snappy high rpm's to get it's power. You take an old rpm engine you just have out and out lugging power that doesn't seem to end plus some cubes also help. Far as those brakes. Take them apart, give them a good cleaning, I mean good elbow grease on those actuators and any contacting surfaces with some coarse emery cloth. Remove springs and if weak replace them. Clean those pockets and shine them up good, also the steel balls. Do not put anything in the pockets as it only will trap and build up with dirt. Now install a fresh set of disks. Install with the sharp edge of splined bore away from actuator. Now clean and polish the pullrod ball and pocket that apply the brakes,and apply some NEVER-SIEZE to both before assembly. Now when ever you park that tractor for any longer period of time make sure that pedals are locked together and applied and you should have brakes that last a long time. Good luck.
