This is a common problem. The gearbox is not adjustable. It is however possible to replace the sector bushings and the bearings. The arm that connects to the tie-rods should have next to no free movement up and down. This is caused by worn bushings. The big nut on the front of the steering box retains the lower bearing for the steering wheel shaft and should be good and tight. If the steering wheel can be pulled towards you and away from you when you are in the seat; that lower bearing is shot. Also the tie rod ends are adjustable. Turn the steering most of the way in either direction. If the loosenes is now considerably less that means the gears are probably shot. Originally the gearboxes were filled with gear oil but often they get pumped full of chassis grease. A good used box is worth about $150. Don't pass on the tractor if the rest of it is good and is priced right.
