I had a 48 cub with same problem clicking and noisy in 2nd. I replaced the small idler gear and reversed the large . second gear Those two run together in 2nd The larger gear is straight toothed I took a grinder and beveled the front edge of each tooth so it would engage better and now it's perfect. I got the small gear out of a TSC parts book I think it to be about 80.00 but am not sure as I did this a few year back. It worked!! Hope this helps Ben I think the name for the small gear to be call reverse Idler.
