300U LPG

I've got my 300 rewired to 12v with new everything on the ignition. I've checked the wires and they're right. The valves are all moving. It had set for several years in a pasture but was running when parked because of a stripped collar on the pto shaft.All i can get when turning it over is a backfire(blowing out of the carb) once in a while. The plugs are all firing. I'll check the timing on my next days off but I haven't changed it. What scares me is my problem could be the carb and I've never had a lpg carb apart.
What do I need to look for and can it be put back together by a shadetree mech. Appreciate any advice.
