gas in oil

I've got a 50 cub its all original and runs good.but this weekend I cut a load of wood and checked the oil before I cranked it up and the oil level was up a inch and could smell gas in the oil off the dip stick.I have run the tractor at the most 1 hour on this oil change and keep the gas shut off when it sits in the shed and the engine has never flooded but it does run rich does any one have a clue how this happend? I have seen this happen to lawn mower motors before but never a tractor.thanks for your help
