M won't stay in 5th

There is something wrong with my M that causes it to pop out of 5th gear after a few seconds of travel. If you hold on to the shifter, it will stay in 5th but the way that tractors moves, i would rather have both hands on the wheel. the previous owner had something that he used to tie it back but i plan to use it to haul big loads of wood and i like to start out in 4th and then move into 5th when i get going. how much will it cost me in time and money to fix this? thanks!
