I just did the brakes on my '47 B last year so some of it is still fresh in my memory. The axle housing + final drive was heavier than I could lift...I'm guessing between 200 and 300 lbs. The axle housing alone is about 50 to 70 lbs. I remember having to really work to pry the RH axle housing from the final drive, but the axle housing lifted off easily. The alignment dowel remained captive in one of the castings. What was really holding the two castings together was the dowel that holds the brake band in place. Mine was rusted and stuck so badly that I thought I was going to have to drill it out. IH no longer carries the dowel so I made one from bar stock. I agree with the other fellow about safety. I did both sides of my B by myself, but I was really nervous about leaving the back end of the tractor on a jack stand for very long. I removed and re-installed the LH axle housing/final drive with an engine hoist. Removal was easy but I had trouble re-aligning bolt holes when I installed it. I did the RH side with a transmission jack and it worked much better. I raised the jack up underneath the final drive and chained the final drive down to the jack. Then I unbolted the axle housing at the transmission and held onto the axle housing as I pushed the jack away. I managed to do it myself, but I think having another person helping would have been safer.

Today's Featured Article - Gatherin of the Orange - by Rick Nikolich. In July of 1998 I was talking to fellow Allis Chalmers collector Mike Schilling about the annual "Gathering of The Orange" AC show coming up in August of 1999. He got this wild idea that we should get a convoy of AC tractors and drive them from Charlotte, Michigan 105 miles to LaGrange, Indiana. ... [Read Article]
