Don't know about the white smoke... The "shut down after a few minutes" combined with finding rust in the sediment bowl might be the old "clogged carb inlet screen". I wound up sticking a universal inline fuel filter in the fuel line to catch the fine stuff that passed thru the sediment bowl screen, after cleaning the inlet screen a dozen times in a single day. I haven't had to clean it since. At the very least, look at the inlet screen to see if it is dirty.
