Doug, I preface with saying that I havn't had to pull a final drive on either of my A or B's. But I wouldn't try to drive out the dowl, it's just used for alignment. Use some penetrating oil and/or heat to help if it's rusty. The dowl usually bottoms out in the hole on the inside, otherwise it would just push through when you assembled the pieces and it wouldn't help you. Weight wise, I would plan on the final drive being a two man job. All too often I have started something like that, and then wished I had a second hand when it was too late. Also, plan for the effect on the tractors ballance before the final drive actually comes off. ie: make sure the rest is very stable. I've heard that once a tractor tastes blood, it's incurable;) Only thing worse than a tractor with weak brakes is a tractor with no driver, so be safe. As for the unrelated question, I think all straight A/B's should have the Farmall grill emblem, the Super A's and C's have the IH grill emblem. That puts the switchover around '48. I can imagine some of the earliest Super A's or maybe the late A/Bs (like above SN 200,000 from the Louisville plant) might be exceptions. Others will have to post their experience with those. And there will always be some that have had the grill swapped already to confuse matters. Stan(VA).
