M transmission fluid check

Thanks to all who have helped so far with my new M.
Another question... I can't seem to find any check valve or stick for trans fluid level. I do see the 3/4 inch plug on top of the housing, where your right foot would be. Also, there seems to be fluid leaking from where the right axle goes into the axle housing. Is this the famous felt seal I have heard about?
