1066 pop, pop,pop

I have a 1066 that makes a "popping" or "puffing" sound; sounds like an old single cylinder engine. I investigated and the sound is deafening when I remove the secondary (the largest one) air filter. I think it's maybe an exhaust valve sticking, but I don't have any noticeable smoke. Any ideas?
