I also have a '48 SA. If you do a search in the archives (see left side of the page) you'll see a number of posts--some quite recent--that contain some very detailed information you will find most helpful in resolving this common problem.

Similarly for locating a manual; you'll find a number of posts that give information on where to order a manual. BTW, I have both a IH "Operator's Manual" and "Preventive Maintenance Manual" I purchased from the local IH dealer here after I found the tractor in 1966, as well as a "I&T Shop Service Manual". Each has proven to be helpful in its own way over the years.
