Like Allan said, it would be an exellent idea to pull them all of the way out. Not just to inspect and see what exactly you've got, but also to clean those tubes down to bare metal with a wire brush on your grinder. Apply a large amount of never-seeze to the tubes before you reassemble, and it might go a little easier next time you want to adjust.
