What exactly does "steam from the engine" mean? From the radiator cap
From the exhaust pipe
From the cylinder head gasket
Elsewhere? Hard to believe you could crack a head in 5 - 10 min but the white smoke and coincidence following loss of cooling are pretty peculiar. Have you checked compression or water level in the radiator? You could remove all the spk plugs, crank it, and look for water. What a bummer if so.
