Jim pretty much has all the possiblities covered. Definetly start by double-checking your free travel adjustment. Keep in mind that some of these little IH's take a few seconds for the gears to slow down enough to shift without grinding, but if you still have significant grinding after five seconds holding the pedal down with the engine at low idle, you may have a problem. I've only had one tractor do this after a clutch job. It was a little 855 Deere. I was 100% positive that everything was assembled correctly. I put it in high gear, stood on the brakes, and "burnished" the clutch by slowly releasing the pedal just enough to let the disk slip for several seconds. I did this about five times, after which it worked perfect.
