Positive Ground?

You say, "68 year old generator," which leads me to believe you are using the original ignition system. It is probably positive ground. Originally almost all these tractors were. If you install the battery like you would in your car, with the negative terminal grounded, you just might kill ("let the smoke out of") the generator and/or regulator. If, however, you have a 12 volt conversion, all bets are off.
