The reason they sell Alaskan oil to Japan is it is cheaper to ship oil
from Venezuela to the US east coast than it is to ship it from
Alaska. Japan is closer to Alaska than most of the lower 48 are, so
the shipping charges from Alaska to Japan are cheaper. It actually
is cheaper (because of shipping charges) for us to sell Alaskan oil
to Japan and use that money to buy oil from Venezuela.
