Its usually NOT the ammeter, if thats the "gauge" you were referring to. A typical galvo type (not an induction type) ammeter is almost like a dead short circuit so the voltage on one side ought to be near the same as on the other. Hals method of measuring the battery voltage is best, it ought to be around 12.6 volts setting tractor NOT running but rise to the 14 and over volt range at RPM if the charging system works.

What alternator you have?? If its a 3 wire GM 10 SI are you sure its getting excitation voltage on its lil No. 1 side terminal?? and miost all alternators require Negative ground and a reversal of ammeter leads if it was Positive but you switched to Negative ground
